The Gothic art period took place in Europe between the 12th and 16th century. Gothic movement mostly influenced architecture, but it also brought significant changes to sculpture and painting. Gothic architecture was seen mostly in cathedrals. Gothic sculpture was created to decorate the entrances of cathedrals. It grew out of the Byzantine and Romanesque traditions. Gothic art is more expressive in the use of lines, pattern and color, allowing the artist more freedom of interpretation.
